Estimating Measures of Labor Market Imperfection for Five OECD Countries, Using Aggregate Data in an Equilibrium Search Framework

چکیده
In this paper we de ne and estimate measures of labor market imperfection in the context of an equilibrium search and matching framework. The method uses readily available aggregate data on marginal distributions of unemployment and job durations and wages. We estimate an index of search frictions, the magnitude of structural and frictional unemployment, and the average monopsony power of rms, and we examine the e ect of the minimum wage, unemployment bene ts and search frictions on monopsony power. Estimation of some of the characteristics is invariant to the way in which wage determination is modeled. We perform separate empirical analyses for the USA, the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Search in Macroeconomic Models of the Labor Market ∗
This chapter assesses how models with search frictions have shaped our understanding of aggregate labor market outcomes in two contexts: business cycle fluctuations and long-run (trend) changes. We first consolidate data on aggregate labor market outcomes for a large set of OECD countries. We then ask how models with search improve our understanding of these data. Our results are mixed. Search ...
متن کاملJob Finding and Inflow to Unemployment : The Case of Iran
In order to analyze the labor market through search and matching theory, we need deep parameters namely, rate of inflow to the unemployment pool and job-finding rate. In other words, these rates are primary parameters of matching function; hence, estimating these parameters is an essential step for the use of search and matching theory in every economy. In this paper, we estimate these rates of...
متن کاملStudy of the Long Run Relationship Between Good Market Efficiency and Labor Market Efficiency in the Global Competitiveness Index and the Variables of Economic Success (Economic Growth and Unemployment) in Selected Countries of Asia
This study examines the long run relationship between the efficiency component (good market efficiency and labor market efficiency) in the global competitiveness index and the variables of economic success (economic growth and unemployment) by using new econometric methods in selected countries of Asia with the average upward Global Competitiveness Index. This study, in the framework of the Pan...
متن کاملThe Labor Market Effects of Immigration and Emigration in OECD Countries
The Labor Market Effects of Immigration and Emigration in OECD Countries In this paper, we simulate the labor market effects of net immigration and emigration during the 1990’s in all OECD countries. To accomplish this, we are the first to employ a comprehensive database of migrant stocks, grouped by education level and country of origin/destination, for the years 1990 and 2000. Due to the much...
متن کاملEstimating a Search and Matching Model with Sticky Price and Staggered Wage Negotiation
This paper estimates a search and matching model of the aggregate labor market with sticky price and staggered wage negotiation. It starts with a partial equilibrium search and matching model and expands into a general equilibrium model with sticky price and staggered wage. I study the quantitative implications of the model. The results show that (1) the price stickiness and staggered wage are ...
